The Liberal Arts Major

Studies in the humanities, social sciences, and sciences traditionally have been regarded as the best preparation one could obtain for the professions. In today's world, professionals are held to unprecedented standards of competence and behavior by the public they serve. Employers expect college-educated individuals to control the technical knowledge of their field, to possess strong written and verbal communication skills, to be able to solve problems, to be flexible team workers, and to be culturally aware. To ensure maximum development of these capacities, Antioch University Midwest offers the Liberal Arts major. The major is structured around:

(1) A general education core encompassing seven broad areas of essential knowledge;
(2) dual concentrations in English language arts and social studies.

The combination of breadth and depth in two areas of specialization found in the Liberal Arts major prepares students to meet the intellectual standards that society demands of professionals in all areas. Coursework in the English language arts and social studies concentrations also complies with the standards for teachers that were established by the National Council of Teachers of English and the National Council of Teachers of Social Studies and which are observed by the Ohio Department of Education for licensing teachers.
