Biographical Information

As a less than stellar high school student, I entered the workforce immediately upon graduation. After several years of washing beakers in a chemistry lab, I received my 5-year anniversary gift brochure (get your free paper weight) and quit. I jumped in my ’79 Ford Mustang for a round trip to Alaska, followed by a short-lived career apprenticing in an antique refinishing shop.

My life changed when I joined City Year Rhode Island and became a part of AmeriCorps’ inaugural year. Service became a part of my life, and I completed a second year of AmeriCorps working with a series of non-profit agencies to provide programming for children.

A week after finishing AmeriCorps, I arrived at Antioch College eager to begin my undergraduate education. The focus on meshing theory and practice drew me to Antioch. In addition to studies, I spent time as a volunteer firefighter, a gardener, and a field research assistant in Brazil, as well as completing a lengthy senior thesis on “Kids Attitudes and Perceptions towards Stimulant Medication (Ritalin)”.

Following a yearlong junior administrative position at Antioch College, I accepted a position in the admissions office, as I tried to figure out what I wanted to be when I grew up. Recruiting for a non-traditional college allowed me the opportunity to visit almost every alternative high school in New England and New York (as well as bringing me home to clam chowdah and thick East Coast accents). I witnessed the alternatives I had missed out on during high school and came away with a renewed interest in the field of education, both secondary and post-secondary. I worked with the college for two and half years.

My move to Antioch University Midwest took place over five years ago. Adult students bring unique interests and passions, as well as reasons for pursuing graduate education. Their range of experience is much wider than undergraduates, in some cases spanning over four decades. I am fortunate to be able to engage these individuals in the pursuit of an education that I support with confidence. I have been managing work and school commitments since 2003 and understand first hand the challenges that adults face upon returning to school.
