Policy On Auditing Classes AUM Audit Policy PDF

Members of the community may petition to audit any course offered by Antioch University Midwest. Authorization for the audit rests with the chair of the program in which the course is offered, with input from the faculty teaching the course and the student's advisor, if applicable.

If a course is taken on an audit basis, no credit will be issued. In most cases, a person taking a course on an audit basis is exempt from completing any work that will be evaluated by the instructor, but is subject to all other requirements of the course, including attendance and participation policies. The instructor is authorized to remove an auditor from his or her class if these attendance and participation requirements are not met.

On occasion, an individual may audit a course as a remedial strategy for enhancing students' knowledge or skills. In these cases, the specific requirements will be stipulated by the instructor.

If approved, a person may take no more than 2 courses on an audit status per term. Please note: Courses taken on an audit status are not counted toward financial aid eligibility.

Registration status may be changed from audit to credit, or from credit to audit, during the drop/add period only. Once the drop/add period ends, students may not change the course status. Under no circumstances may a student registered for a course on audit status petition to complete additional work to earn credit.

Process: Permission to audit a course will not be finalized until the first day of the quarter, to ensure that there is space available in the class. The request is made to the chair of the department or program of the requested course. The chair will consult with the appropriate faculty and determine whether or not to grant permission to audit the course based on the following criteria:

  • A determination of whether the course material lends itself to an audit status
  • The current and anticipated enrollment in the course (e.g. unfilled seats)
  • The petitioner’s ability to comprehend the material covered by the course, including consideration of any course prerequisites;
  • The appropriateness of an audit status for the petitioner

If permission is granted, the chair will contact the auditor, who will need to bring a registration form signed by the chair of the program to the Registrar's office for processing.

Fee structure: Courses taken on an audit basis will be billed at 50% of the regular course tuition.
