Cherise D. Hairston is a teaching assistant with 18 years of academic and professional experience in the field of Conflict Analysis and Engagement as a professional mediator, team development consultant, conflict systems designer, conflict resolution curriculum developer, teacher, conflict coach, trainer, independent researcher and writer. Cherise has been a team member of the community-based mediation center, Dayton Mediation Center, in Dayton, Ohio for the past 14 years where she serves as Mediation Specialist, Volunteer Coordinator, and Team Development consultant. For the past 14 years, Cherise has been a Certified Transformative Mediator ™ and Associate with the Think Tank, the Institute for the Study of Conflict Transformation, Inc., where she has played a central role in advancing the theory and practice of Transformative Mediation. Cherise has been published in Mediation Quarterly, now Conflict Resolution Quarterly, “African-Americans in Mediation Literature: A Neglected Population”, 1999, volume 16, number 4; and in the book Re-Centering: Culture and Knowledge in Conflict Resolution Practice, 2008, Syracuse University Press.
Professional Teaching Experience
Cherise has held adjunct faculty teaching positions at Antioch University Midwest (Yellow Springs, Ohio), Wright State University (Fairborn, Ohio), and Miami University (Middletown, Ohio), teaching a range of courses such as conflict resolution theory, communications and conflict, environmental conflict resolution, and mediation theory and practice. She has served as a graduate capstone advisor, teaching assistant and graduate student advisor at Antioch University Midwest. Cherise custom designs conflict resolution training for community groups and organizations, and supports individuals wishing to engage conflict constructively by providing one-on-one conflict coaching.
Cherise completed doctoral studies (all but dissertation) in the School of Social Sciences and Humanities in the Department of Conflict Analysis and Resolution at Nova Southeastern University, Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, where she earned honors as an Advanced Practitioner in Conflict Analysis and Resolution in 2012. She is 1998 alumnae of Antioch University Midwest, where she earned a Master of Arts in Conflict Resolution. Cherise holds a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science with a minor in Women’s Studies from Miami University in Oxford, Ohio.
Cherise has been deeply influenced by the work of scholar-practitioner, mentor, and friend Michael Lang, former Chair of Antioch University McGregor’s Master of Arts program in Conflict Resolution. His focus on the importance of reflective practice, and his powerful work on developing artistry/excellence in mediation and conflict analysis and engagement practice, has been an important influence in her professional work. During her graduate work with Michael, he exposed her to the work of Robert K. Greenleaf and his philosophy of “servant-leadership” where leaders are committed to focusing on the growth and well-being of those they support and lead. Cherise continues to benefit from her long-time mentorship and friendship with Professors Robert A. Baruch Bush, JD and Dr. Joseph Folger, co-authors of one of the seminal works in the field of Conflict Analysis and Engagement, The Promise of Mediation. Finally, Cherise’s theoretical approach to the analysis and engagement of conflict has been informed by the mentorship and guidance provided to her by past professors at Nova Southeastern University, Drs. Sean Byrne and Jessica Senehi. Cherise also recognizes Dr. Richard McGuigan who has provided her with compassionate and loving mentorship for the past 3 years. His desire to move the field of Conflict Analysis and Engagement toward a wider and more
grounded perspective and to shape the development of scholar-practitioners is inspiring.
Cherise is a native of Dayton, Ohio, and is a Dayton history buff with extreme passions for aviation legends Orville and Wilbur Wright. She is a budding amateur photographer, and loves music and reading.
