This practitioner study focuses on the question, “What happens in action learning?” To explore my lived experiences in action learning groups, I engaged in a creative, expressive method of meaning making. My findings about action learning and my experiences with this alternative method of expression are shared via videotape, text and images.
This study illuminated my experiences with action learning as a participatory approach that connects and allows for deeper, sometimes transformational learning. I find that action learning contributes to a community of learners and creates paths of possibility. Action learning weaves a conversation that binds us together in ways that encourage a deepening of our relationships. It is in these loving relationships that we find ourselves, our creativity, a broader vision of what is possible, and an increased capacity to act on our vision.
This study stretches the boundaries of creative expression and challenges the traditional text only format of most academic reporting. Findings and methodology are presented in two formats. I share what I’ve learned about action in a story telling format presented and videotaped before action learning group members. In a companion publication created with text and visual images, I re-trace the art or image-making method and the multiple patterns and emotions I encountered during this study.
