Evaluations
The Satisfactory Academic Progress policy evaluates:

  • The quality (student’s positive evaluations)
  • The quantity or Pace-of-Progressions (credit hours attempted and credit hours earned)
  • The Maximum Time Frame ( duration of eligibility)

While a student must earn positive evaluations as determined by the faculty in their Department, they must also maintain Satisfactory Academic Progress to receive any type of Financial Aid.

Academic Credit
The awarding of academic credit at Antioch University Midwest is based upon evaluation by a faculty member competent in the matter being certified and in a position to have adequate evidence that the learning, achievement, competence or other matter certified has been met.

To support the awarding or denial of credit, the instructor shall submit a written narrative evaluation of the quality and characteristics of the student’s performance in the learning event. The instructor is expected to complete an evaluation for each student in every credit-bearing course or learning activity.

As a minimum standard, academic credit may be awarded toward a degree only if the student’s performance is at least “satisfactory.”

Antioch University defines “satisfactory” to mean the following:

  • For undergraduate credit, the student has performed at a level that would be considered at least a “C” or better in a graded system.
  • For graduate credit, the student has performed at a level that would be considered “B” or better in a graded system.
IP (In Progress)
IP grades may be issued for courses that span more than one term. Students making acceptable progress during the quarter in which they registered for the course receive an IP, and receive credit upon completion of the course.

Courses associated with IP grades include:

  • Internships
  • Practica
  • Capstones
  • Thesis

Students may take a maximum of three additional quarters to complete a course with a grade of IP. If not completed in this time frame, the IP designation will convert to No Credit.

Unsatisfactory Performance
Unsatisfactory performance is defined as follows:

  • INC (incomplete). Students may request an incomplete if they have performed satisfactorily in a course but have some portion of the course to complete after the end of the term. An instructor may award an incomplete at his or her discretion. Incompletes must be successfully completed no later than the end of the following term or they convert to No Credit.
  • NC (no credit). This designation is based upon not fulfilling minimum course requirements. NC will be given in graduate courses for work not meeting the equivalent of a “B” or better. NC will be given in undergraduate courses for work not meeting the equivalent of a “C” or better.
Pace-of-Progression
Pace-of-Progression requires the student to complete coursework at the minimum rate of 67% toward graduation. Completed coursework is defined as any course for which the student receives a passing grade.

Academic records are reviewed at the end of each term. Transfer credits are calculated in the determination of total credits attempted and total credits earned. The maximum pace of progression is as follows:

1. Undergraduate studies – 4 semesters of full-time with 75 transfer credits (Full time is considered 12 credits per semester.)
2. Teacher Licensure – 4 semesters at full-time ( Full time is considered 6 credit hours per semester)
3. Master of Education w/ Professional Concentration – 3 semesters at full-time
4. Reading Endorsement – 3 semesters at full-time
5. Teacher Leader Endorsement – 2 semesters at full-time
6. Early Childhood Education Generalists – 3 semesters at part-time
7. Ohio Principal Licensure – 3 semesters at full-time
8. Conflict Analysis and Engagement – 4 semesters at full-time
9.
Management Leading Change – 4 semesters at full-time
10. Individualized Masters of Arts – 4 semesters at full-time.

Maximum Hours and Financial Aid
A student’s entire academic record of Student Financial Aid (including prerequisite courses) is used in calculating hours toward the maximum requirement. Transferred course work shall also count toward the maximum number of allowable credit hours.

Maximum hours allowed shall be checked after the end of each term to determine if the maximum hours allowed have been met. If the student has exceeded the allowable number (150%) of hours for their program, they will be denied further financial aid for that degree level.

For all degree programs and allowable certificates, the maximum number of hours allowed will be set at one-and-a-half times the minimum program length.

Appeals to Denial of Financial Aid Due to Unsatisfactory Progress
Students who are not making satisfactory academic progress will be placed on Financial Aid Warning for the next term. Students will still be able to receive financial aid during the Warning term. If the student is still not making satisfactory academic progress after the Warning term and they have been notified that they will lose their financial aid, the student may file a written appeal to the financial aid office within thirty (30) days after they receive their letter of denial.

Written appeals should state:

  • Why the student failed to make satisfactory academic progress
  • What has changed that would allow the student to re-achieve the requirements at the end of the next term.
  • Include documentation that supports the circumstances concerning the failure to maintain the expected level of satisfactory progress.

If an appeal is granted, the student is placed on Financial Aid Probation and should meet satisfactory academic progress by the end of the next term.

If the student does not meet the requirements, they will lose their financial aid.

Students are permitted a maximum of 2 appeals. All decisions on appeals are final. Students will be notified of the results of their appeal through Antioch’s Gmail account.
