Biographical Information
Before coming to Antioch University
McGregor, I served as the chair of the Philosophy Department
at Thomas More College in Northern Kentucky, where I taught
over twenty different classes during a span of over ten
years. In addition to teaching a variety of Philosophy courses,
I have also developed and taught a number of other interdisciplinary
courses. In many of my classes, I have incorporated service
learning and community engagement activities in order to
challenge students to realize new and actual possibilities
for the concepts they learn in their classes.
I have taught in a number of formats
and styles to a wide variety of students, including inner-city
junior high school students (in New York and Cincinnati),
gifted high school juniors (through the Kentucky Governor’s
Scholars Program), traditional age college students, returning,
and “non-traditional” adult learners. In addition,
I have organized and participated in a service learning
trip to Jamaica linked to a Philosophy of Education course.
I have also published two books, and am working on a joint
project entitled Service Learning as a Critical Pedagogy.
I believe that each concept a student
learns has meaning largely in the context of that student’s
lived experience; I also believe it is essential for adult
learners to develop a deeper understanding of their life
experience by continually renewing their commitments to
action, reflection, discussion, and critical investigation.
Finally, I believe it is an essential principle of higher
education that university life and community life continue
to feed and rejuvenate one another.
