This workshop will focus on the development of an inclusive culture and respectful school climate by exploring a variety of topics related to diversity including gender roles, socioeconomic status, race and culture, religion, and diverse family structures.

The day will include an interactive Cost of Poverty Experience facilitated by ThinkTank of Clark County. The Cost of Poverty Experience is an event that offers participants an interactive exploration into the lives of low-income individuals and families. It is a glimpse into the obstacles that are faced, the decisions that are made, and the consequences that impact these families every day. The activity was co-designed with low income individuals who shared their story so that participants could gain greater understanding. COPE has been used to help many organizations and communities across the nation work more effectively with low income families and understand and address the issues of poverty more comprehensively.

This workshop training is appropriate for pre-K through 12th grade school communities – educators, administrators, and families. The information and experience is also applicable to professionals in youth-serving organizations and individuals in education related professionals. Resources will be available for further exploration of topics.

FREE Evening Presentation: Simplicity Parenting
Presenter: Kim John Payne, Center for Social Sustainability
Date: May 8th , 2013       Time: 7-9pm     Location: Antioch University Midwest

In this evening presentation Kim John Payne explains why less is more and presents four simplicity pathways you can take to help your child feel calmer, happier and more secure. This is the work and which provided the inspiration for Kim’s book by the same name (published in August 2009). It presents not only four simple steps, but provides examples of how to bring “the power of less” into your home on a daily basis.

So much of modern life seems to be about more. Very few presentations you will attend will suggest that you do less, but this is one of them. It quietly presents ‘do-able’ daily ways in which we can simplify our families lives and by doing so build resiliency within our children.
