Senator Sherrod Brown Confirmed as Antioch University McGregor’s Keynote Commencement Speaker

Sherrod BrownYELLOW SPRINGS, OH—United States Senator Sherrod Brown (D-OH) will address over 250 graduates at Antioch University McGregor’s commencement ceremony on Sunday, July 18, 2010.  The ceremony begins at 2:00p.m. and will be held at the Benjamin and Marian Schuster Performing Arts Center in Dayton.  Graduates will receive Bachelor of Arts degrees, Master of Arts degrees and Master of Education degrees.  Fields of study represented include Education, Humanities, Management, Health & Wellness, Conflict Analysis & Engagement, and Human Services Administration as well as an individual student-designed masters degree program available in the liberal arts and social sciences.

The event will acknowledge other highlights in Antioch University McGregor’s recent history, including the appointment of AUM’s second president, Dr. Michael Fishbein, and the seating of the first Board of Trustees, chaired by Phillip L. Parker, president of the Dayton Area Chamber of Commerce.

“Adult students balance burdens of work and family with their studies and we honor them at this Commencement,” said Dr. Michael Fishbein, president of Antioch University McGregor.  “It is for this reason that we are privileged to have Senator Brown join us on the most special day of the academic year.  Senator Brown’s dedication to sustainability and the environment, education and social justice causes, reflects the commitments and values McGregor students bring to their academic experience.”

Since assuming office in January of 2007, Senator Brown – a tireless advocate for Ohio’s middle class – has held more than a 150 community roundtables across the state, visiting each of Ohio’s 88 counties at least once to talk with local leaders, business owners, educators and regular citizens with the hope of finding ways to rebuild the nation’s middle class.

Believing that our nation’s higher education system is critical to our national economic strength, Senator Brown convenes a one-of-its-kind Ohio College Presidents Conference in Washington, D.C. For the past three years, more than 50 presidents from Ohio’s four- and two-year colleges and universities – including Antioch University Midwest President Dr. Michael Fishbein – have been working together to expand higher education access and affordability, support opportunities for research and innovation, and connect higher education with high schools and workforce needs.

As a member of the Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions (H.E.L.P.), Senator Brown is fighting to ensure that Ohioans who work hard and play by the rules have access to affordable health care, benefit from critical educational opportunities, and receive the security that their dignified work deserves.

A native of Mansfield, Ohio, Senator Brown is married to Pulitzer Prize-winning columnist Connie Schultz. They reside in Avon, Ohio, and have three daughters, a son, and a grandson, all of whom call Ohio home.
