Antioch University Receives 10-Year Reaccreditation from the Higher Learning Commission

AU-Web-SealYELLOW SPRINGS, OH – The Higher Learning Commission (HLC) announced on December 9, 2013, that it has formally approved Antioch University for reaccreditation for a ten-year period.  The formal approval is the culmination of a three-year process that included a substantial “self-study” of the university and site visits to all five Antioch University campuses and to the central administrative offices. The HLC is an independent corporation and one of two commission members of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools.  The HLC accredits degree-granting post-secondary educational institutions in the North Central region of the United States.

“We are extremely pleased to have our accreditation reaffirmed by the HLC. The process is complex and rigorous and served as a great way to fully examine how to continuously enhance our ability to serve our students while adhering to our mission. We come out of this as a stronger and more integrated university, and I want to thank our five presidents, our self-study steering committee and all of the individuals who engaged in this successful reaccreditation process,” said Antioch University Chancellor Felice Nudelman.

Antioch University is a bold and enduring source of innovation in higher education serving about 5,000 adult students around the world and across the country, online and from its five campuses in four states in addition to its University-wide international and doctoral programs. The University’s central administrative offices are located in Yellow Springs, Ohio, and the campuses are in Keene, New Hampshire; Los Angeles and Santa Barbara, California; Seattle, Washington; and Yellow Springs.

The review team’s report that followed the site visits noted that the self-study document was comprehensive, thorough and “one of most candid [they] have ever read…[and the ]…resource room was one of the most attractive and functional sites team members had experienced.“  The team members found that the individuals interviewed were extensively engaged and “very knowledgeable,” and that the campuses serve their regions through academic programs that “show a striking parallel between mission, integration, and responsiveness to the communities in which the [campus] resides.”  According to the report, the site visit team members were “impressed with qualifications and commitment of members of both the Board of Governors and Boards of Trustees.” 

As an additional highlight of the reaffirmation of accreditation, Educause recently published an article in their journal about Antioch University’s innovative process and the collaboration between IT and Academic Affairs in the self-study.  This is the first time Educause has published an article about accreditation. The article is entitled IT’s Support of a Transformative Self-Study Process and Product and can be accessed online. Antioch University has also been invited to present its self-study Exhibit Hall as a successful model at the upcoming HLC annual conference.

In addition to reaffirming the University’s accreditation, as part of this review, the HLC removed the site-based limitations on the University’s doctoral programs and approved Antioch University to offer doctoral degrees in the general disciplines of leadership and change, psychology, and environmental studies.

Antioch University has been continuously accredited since 1927 and underwent its last comprehensive reaffirmation of accreditation in 2002. Antioch University’s mission is to provide learner-centered education to empower students with the knowledge and skills to lead meaningful lives and to advance social, economic, and environmental justice.
